Hugo Valvanne

Hugo Valvanne (born July 18, 1894 in Pedersöre , † July 25, 1961 in Funen , Denmark ) was a Finnish diplomat , author and translator of books on theosophy . Until 1906 he was called Wegelius .

Life

Hugo Valvanne was the son of Johanna Elisabeth Häggman and Henrik Eliel Wegelius. The theosophist and author Väinö Valvanne was his younger brother. From 1929 until the divorce in 1945 he was married to Eva Arokallio. From 1947 he was married to Birgitte Gulpager.

Hugo Valvanne studied at the Universities of Helsinki, London, Toulouse and at the Academy of International Law in The Hague and completed his studies with a master's degree. He entered the foreign service in 1919, was accredited to the embassy in Moscow in 1921, to the embassy in London from 1921 to 1925, and to the embassy in Bern from 1926 to 1928. From 1926 to 1928 he was a representative of the Finnish government at the League of Nations and at the International Labor Organization . From 1934 to 1936 he was envoy in Tokyo , from 1936 in Shanghai , China.

From 1949 to 1956, Valvanne was Finland's first ambassador to India after the British colonial era. Based in New Delhi , he was also accredited by the governments in Beijing and Sukarno in Jakarta . From 1956 to 1959 he was ambassador in Bern and signed a double taxation agreement . He was then chief of protocol at the Foreign Ministry.
