Human is a song by the British synth-pop band The Human League from 1986 , written and produced by the American producer duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis . The song was released as a single from the album Crash in the summer of 1986 and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and number five in the German single charts .
background
The collaboration with producers Chris Thomas and Hugh Padgham on the album Hysteria did not bring the expected commercial success, so that Virgin Records first suggested Colin Thurston as producer for the following album after the creative break of the band . However, the first sessions in 1985 for the new album were unsuccessful. Jo Callis then left the band in the direction of Feargal Sharkey and was replaced by Jim Russell. In addition, The Human League had a dispute with the label due to the lack of ideas. Virgin sent the band to the US to join Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis , who had just put Janet Jackson on the road to success with Control .
The recordings were completed at Flyte Time Studios in Minneapolis with Steve Hodge as an engineer before further recordings became impossible due to a heated dispute between the band and the producers over the session musicians and the creative input from outside the band. The album was mixed there too.
The version recorded for the album was shortened to a length of 3:48 minutes for the single release and released on August 21, 1986. After Don't You Want Me , Human is the band's second and last number one hit in the United States .
content
Human is a new wave ballad about a couple who reunited after a breakup. Phil Oakey sang the role of the man, as well as a large part of the song . The part in which the couple reconciles can be seen in the lines Only Human and Born to Make Mistakes .
Music video
Andy Morahan directed the music video, which was filmed in a studio in London in 1986 using blue screen technology . It shows the band against a blue background with water effects.
reception
The Billboard Magazine discusses crash in August 1986 with the words: "While the band lacks the depth of talent did Jackson Displayed, there are several strong shots for radio here, most notably, human ',' The Real Thing 'and, Love Is All That Matters'. ”(While the band lacks the great talent of Janet Jackson, there are several strong titles for the radio stations, most notably 'Human', 'The Real Thing' and 'Love is all That Matters'.)
Stuart Maconie reviews the album for the New Musical Express in July 1990 and says: “The band's fizzy gawky pop heritage sat uneasily with the Minneapolis duo's state of the art urban funk. Human stood out a mile. “(The band's hissing clumsy pop legacy did not mix with the ultra-modern, urban funk of the Minneapolis duo. Human stands out a mile.)
