Humfried of Gothien

Humfried (also Humsfrid , Unifred , or Hunifredo , * before 843, † after 864) was Count of Barcelona , Girona , Empúries , Rosselló and Narbonne from 858 to 864. He was born in Franconia without any connection to Goths .

He rebelled against King Ludwig the German and had to flee to France , where he found refuge with Charles the Bald . As one of the few noblemen who were loyal to Karl, Karl appointed him Count and Margrave of several lords in the Spanish Mark in 858 . In his new office, Humfried immediately negotiated a peace treaty with the Moorish governor of Saragossa . That saved his back to come to support Karl. He marched on Gaul , reached Beaune in February, and paid homage to Charles on March 21st. When Karl (and Humfried) moved against the Vikings , Ludwig took advantage of this and invaded western France . Humfried stood by Karl's side in the fight against Ludwig. In September Humfried gathered his troops in Beaune and led them into the victorious battle against Ludwig at Saint-Quentin on January 15, 859.

In 861 the Moors besieged Barcelona . Humfried was able to drive them out and, with the consent of Karl, renewed the peace treaty with them. In 862, Charles the Child , King of Aquitaine and son of Charles the Bald, fell out of favor with his father - and Humfried with him. On August 19, Humfried was deposed, which he did not accept. He conquered Toulouse and drove out Count Raimund I. Karl then confiscated Humfried's property in Burgundy. Pippin II , the deposed King of Aquitaine, led a group of Vikings against Toulouse, but was repulsed. When Humfried was finally defeated in the fighting, he fled to Italy.
