The Hummelberg is a 94.4 meter high elevation west of Schönebeck (Elbe) .

Different names

Marked by the former clay and loam mining, the hill had a wide variety of names in the past. Initially referred to as Hohendorfer Berg after the village at its foot, it is later named as a vineyard after a pastor had vines planted. Only later was it called Hummerscher Berg , Hummelsberg and Hummelberg - probably named after family names.

Formerly a place of worship

When the A. & W. Allendorff brothers had the ice cellar built in 1841 , excavations led to an ash store where, among other things, charred bones, vessels and hairpins were found. These archaeological finds indicate that the Hummelberg served as a place of sacrifice and cult place in prehistoric times .

Buildings on the hill

A windmill is said to have been on the elevation since 1600 (first verifiable dating 1781) , which was relocated to Pommelte around 1860 , today's post mill Pommelte . The local mill association has been looking after the building since 1996.

After the gardens on the eastern slope laid out in 1838, a two-story house was built in 1841 , which was used as a restoration from 1844 . In 1995 the half-ruined building was torn down and the air shafts of the still-preserved cellar vaults were renovated; today the basement is used as bat quarters .

The Schönebeck entrepreneurs A. & W. Allendorff had a 13 meter high tower building built as a summer house in 1870, which was later used as a lookout tower and also housed an observatory from 1956 to 1961 . Currently, a local development association wants to remove the ruinous condition and restore , renovate and make the walls usable again.

In 1893 the elevated tank was put into operation as the Groß-Salze waterworks and is still used today for the water supply - the 1,500 cubic meter tanks have been filled with water from Colbitz and Lindau since 2000 .

Sports

On the Hummelberg there is an 8000 square meter enduro area, which was created by the MSC-Schönebeck 1959 e. V. is operated. A shooting range was built on the west side of the hill in 1966 , which was run by the Hubertus 1990 shooting club. V. is operated.
