Hummersen is first mentioned in a deed of donation from the Corvey Monastery as Hamereshus or Hamershaus in 832 and is therefore the oldest settlement in the city after Lügde. In the 14th century the place, which consisted of Ober- and Niederhummersen, fell desolate. Hummersen was repopulated around 1555.

In the 19th century there were various attempts to mine ore in the Hummersen area. The attempt to find silver failed. However, one came across pebbles that were extracted from the "Volkwin mine". The mining was stopped for economic reasons. As recently as 1923 , major but unsuccessful investments were made in the area to mine precious metals .

The previously independent municipality was incorporated into the municipal reform on January 1, 1970.

Infrastructure

In Hummersen there are a cottage, a small pool , a Nordic walking - course , a wool shop, a popular bank, a 18-hole golf course of the "Golf Club Weserbergland", some commercial businesses and freelance professionals. Several times a week bakers and butchers drive through the town and thus ensure a minimum supply. There is a connection to local public transport, with buses going to Rischenau and Lügde several times a day.

Because of its location in the middle of forests, Hummersen is also called "the forest village".
