Hunga (also: Hounga , Huga ) is an island in the Tongan archipelago of Vavaʻu . In 2008 Hunga had around 230 residents.

geography

Hunga is one of the larger islands in the Vavaʻu archipelago. It is located on the western edge of the atoll, between the Faihava Passage and the Ava Pulepulekai Canal, which leads far into the center of the archipelago and into the center of the main island. Together with Luafatu , Luamoko and their "little sisters" Valetoamamaha , Valetoakakau , Kalau , Fofoa , Foelifuka and Foeata , it forms its own, almost contiguous group of islands with a small lagoon. To the east are the nearest islands Nuapapu , Vakaʻeitu and to the south Totokafonua . The island itself comes up to the north with the headland Matahunga up to approx. 2 km to the Cape Fata (Longomapu) of Vavaʻu. In the canal, in addition to the already mentioned Luafatu, there is also Tuʻungasika on the side of Vavaʻu. In the south, Hunga and its sister islands form a small lagoon in which the islands of Valetoamamaha and Valetoakakau are located. The main town of the island is located on the northern edge of the lagoon.

climate

The climate is tropical hot, but is tempered by constantly blowing winds. Like the other islands in the Vavaʻu group, Hunga is occasionally hit by cyclones .
