Hurşit Tolon

Ahmet Hurşit Tolon (* 1942 in Istanbul ) is a retired Turkish General of the Army (Türk Kara Kuvvetleri) , among others, from 2001 to 2004 commander of the Aegean Army (Ege Ordusu) and between 2004 and 2006 commander of the 1st Army (Birinci Ordu) was. On July 1, 2008 , he was arrested along with the former General Şener Eruygur in the course of an investigation into the nationalist underground movement Ergenekon . In August 2013, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Life

Officer and staff officer

After attending school, Tolon completed an officer training course at the Army School ( Kara Harp Okulu ) , which he completed in 1962. After further training at the infantry school (Piyade Okulu) in 1965, he found numerous uses in various units of the army as a platoon leader and company commander .

In 1978 he completed his training as a staff officer at the Army Academy ( Kara Harp Akademisi ) and subsequently found employment as an officer for personnel planning in the personnel department in the General Staff of Turkey , as an army attaché at the embassy in the USA , as a planning officer in the personnel department of the General Staff , as an officer for generals and admiralty in the personnel department of the general staff and most recently as commander of the 49th infantry regiment belonging to the 39th infantry brigade.

Promotion to general

After his promotion to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) in 1989, Tolon was first Secretary General of the General Staff and then in 1991 commander of the 28th Motorized Infantry Brigade in Mamak . In 1993 he was promoted to major general (Tümgeneral) and reappointed secretary of the general staff. He then became deputy commanding general of the Gendarmerie Command for Public Order (Jandarma Asayiş Kolordu Komutanlığı) in Van and then deputy commanding general of the VII Corps in Yenişehir .

1997 Tolon became lieutenant general (co- general ) and as such the commanding general of the XV. Corps before he became head of the logistics department in the General Staff in 1999.

On August 17, 2001 Tolon was promoted to General (Orgeneral) and took over as the successor to General Çetin Doğan as Commander in Chief of the Aegean Army (Ege Ordu) with headquarters in Izmir . He held this post until August 20, 2004 and was then replaced by General Işık Koşaner . He himself was thereupon on August 20, 2004 successor to General Yaşar Büyükanıt as Commander in Chief of the II., III. 1st Army (Birinci Ordu) with its headquarters in Selimiye Barracks (Selimiye Kışlası) in Istanbul's Üsküdar district . He remained in this post until his retirement on August 19, 2006 and was then replaced by General İlker Başbuğ .

Tolon, who is married with one child, was arrested on July 1, 2008, together with former general and commander-in-chief of the gendarmerie ( Jandarma ) , Şener Eruygur, in the course of an investigation into the nationalist underground movement Ergenekon. Eruygur was at that time chairman of the Kemalist association Ataturkçü Düşünce Derneği (ADD). The two generals were taken to Metris Prison (Metris Cezaevi) after interrogation and Tolon was sentenced to life imprisonment in August 2013.
