J. Hyam Rubinstein

Joachim Hyam Rubinstein (born March 7, 1948 in Melbourne ) is an Australian mathematician.

Life

Rubinstein went to school in Melbourne and studied at Monash University (Bachelor 1969) in Melbourne and received his doctorate in 1974 from the University of California, Berkeley , with John Stallings ( Isotopies of incompressible surfaces in three dimensional manifolds ). As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Melbourne , where he became a lecturer in 1978 and a professor in 1982. From 1989 to 1992 he headed the mathematics faculty and from 2002 to 2004 the faculty of mathematics and statistics. Among other things, he was visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study (1982, 1990), at MSRI , at the University of Warwick , at the University of California, San Diego , at the University of California, Davis , at Stanford University , at the Technion ( as Lady Davis Fellow) and the University of Paris VI .

He deals with low-dimensional topology , minimal surfaces , differential geometry , financial mathematics and optimization of networks (with applications in mining and on machine learning). He is particularly known for his work on algorithms in the topology of three-dimensional manifolds and developed an algorithm that determines from the triangulation of a manifold whether it is homeomorphic to the 3-sphere (implemented in the Regina software system , which he helped develop).

From 1986 to 1988 and 1997 to 2002 he was on the council of the Australian Mathematical Society , he was its president from 1990 to 1992 and vice president from 1988 to 1990 and 1999 to 2000. In 2005 he took over the chairmanship of the national committee for mathematics in Australia . Since 2003 he has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, whose Hannan Medal he received in 2004. In 2008 he received the George Szekeres Medal and in 1987 the Medal of the Australian Mathematical Society. In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich ( An algorithm to recognize the 3-sphere ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
