Hyacinth is of Greek origin and a form of Hyakinthos . The meaning is unclear. There is speculation about a connection with a Greek legend according to which the god Apollo accidentally killed his lover of that name while throwing a discus . According to legend, the hyacinth plant grew out of the blood of his slain lover .
