Sanitary inspectors and health overseers mainly work in public health authorities (e.g. health departments ). In some federal states, hygiene inspectors are civil servants. The job title Hygieneinspektor is derived from civil service law , which is used by some professional associations (for example the Federal Association of Hygiene Inspectors ) as a collective term for this professional group.

Hygiene inspectors are trained in a two-year preparatory service. The district offices, governments or independent cities send their prospective hygiene inspectors to the training centers in Munich, Berlin, Gera or Düsseldorf. The length of the theoretical training varies greatly. Depending on the state and training facility, the number of teaching units is between 430 and 2200.

The training ends with written and oral exams in the above-mentioned subjects. In Bavaria, a successful examination is a prerequisite for acceptance into the civil service.

Public service

As employees, hygiene inspectors are assigned to the TVÖD of the respective country in pay group 8 or 9.

Within the civil service career - which is located in the middle service - various classification levels are passed through.
