The IGS "Walter Karbe" Neustrelitz is an integrated comprehensive school in the city of Neustrelitz and was named after the local historian Walter Karbe (1877–1956). It has the status of an all-day school .
A school newspaper appears under the name Karbe Express .
Since 2001, here, due to the small number of students, only students taught with elementary and secondary school recommendation.
history
In 1948 the decision was made to set up a school in what was then the refugee camp . Until August 25, 1948, the residents of the future school barracks moved into other accommodations. The barrack that has become vacant is then rebuilt. The first school lessons begin on September 8, 1948.
In the DDR
In 1954, the cost of building new toilets and other urgent repair work amounted to 23,450 marks . In the same year the plans for a new school building were completed. The foundation stone will not be laid until 1961, however. But the new building is smaller than originally planned. Classes in the new school building begin on September 2, 1963. On October 6, the school is named "Karl Marx Oberschule" Neustrelitz .
Due to the strong increase in the number of pupils (1,200 pupils in total), it was organizationally divided into two completely independent schools in 1976, which however still exist under one roof. Just one year later, secondary school VIII moved into its new building, which was built just a few 100 meters away. The Karl Marx Oberschule and its students will remain in the previous building.
After the turn
The Neustrelitz city council decided on May 30, 1991 to introduce the new school structure in accordance with the school reform law of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The “Karl Marx Oberschule” became the Integrated Comprehensive School Neustrelitz (IGS) . Grades 1–4 went to primary school in the Neustrelitz district of Kiefernheide with immediate effect . The school is now organized in such a way that all school-leaving qualifications (secondary and secondary school leaving certificate as well as high school diploma) can be obtained.
In April 2000, construction work on the school renovation began while the school was still in operation . Since November 2000, the students have also been able to use the renovated gym (previously the gym of the Kiefernheide secondary school). It is approx. 400 meters from the school premises. In February 2001 all renovation work was completed. The IGS "Walter Karbe" now also has an auditorium .
