IS (Infinite Stratos) ( Japanese IS 〈イ ン フ ィ ニ ッ ト ・ ス ト ラ ト ス〉 , IS (Infinitto Sutoratosu) ) is the title of a light novel series written by Izuru Yumizuru and published by Media Factory from 2009 to 2012 and published in 2013 for Overlap changed. The illustrations accompanying the plot were drawn by Okiura in the Media Factory version and by Choco in the overlap version . It tells the story of the future student Ichika Orimura, who is the only man in the world who is able to control an Infinite Stratos , a kind of mechanical combat suit, which is otherwise only reserved for women.

The light novel series is based on several manga and an anime television series, which was created by the Eight Bit studio and directed by Yasuhito Kikuchi .

action

In the near future, a Japanese scientist designed a mechanical exoskeleton that he named Infinite Stratos (IS). They can essentially be compared to mechas , but they do not cover the whole body. The combat abilities of the carrier are said to differ widely from those of conventional weapons and thus pose a threat to the world order. For this reason, the Alaska Treaty is signed, which stipulates that such units are never used for military purposes and that the existing technology is equally under divided among the undersigned nations. This is to prevent one nation from dominating the world. However, the development of IS has a much greater influence on the social order, as these combat units, due to their structure, can only be controlled by women. Accordingly, the world is now dominated by women.

Ten years after the development of the first IS, the world is in a state of stable peace. However, this is destroyed by the news that the fifteen-year-old boy Ichika Orimura ( 織 斑 一 夏 , Orimura Ichika ) is able to operate an IS. Having become aware of this potential, Ichika is forced by the Japanese government to attend the highly regarded Infinite Stratos Academy , which trains the best pilots in the world. Accordingly, he finds himself in this as the only male person surrounded by numerous female students.

The first thing he meets is his older sister Chifuyu Orimura ( 織 斑 千 冬 , Orimura Chifuyu ), who, to his amazement, is in charge of the school class. She herself was considered the strongest IS pilot of the first generation before she decided to resign. During this time she took in Ichika when the siblings were left behind by their parents. He also meets his early childhood friend Hōki Shinonono ( 篠 ノ 之 箒 , Shinonono Hōki ), who is a student in the same year, but is not immediately recognized by him. They last saw each other six years ago and Hōki is accordingly upset. After all, he had promised the enthusiastic kendo fighter that he would become her friend if she became the national champion. However, it never came to that, because Hōki was placed under the protection of the government along with other members that day. After all, her sister Tabane was involved in the development of IS. Since the split, she has harbored a grudge against her sister and Ichika. The situation becomes explosive when Hōki realizes that she also has to share the accommodation with Ichika. It shows the typical behavior patterns of a Tsundere . Nevertheless, she tries to teach Ichika, with whom she is still secretly in love, so that he can get his IS under control, which is difficult for him at first. In particular, his IS specializes in pure close combat, which is why he needs very good control in combat.

Very soon he is challenged to a duel by the cocky and self-indulgent Englishwoman Cecilia Alcott ( セ シ リ ア オ ル コ ッierende , Seshiria Orukotto ). She had resolved never to marry a weak man. However, this is a very difficult undertaking, especially with regard to the social status of men. Nor can she accept the fact that Ichika is so popular in the class. In the duel, Ichika quickly has to realize that he has a difficult opponent in Cecilia. The student, who specializes in ranged combat, does not allow him to get close to her and the shield energy of his IS is decreasing. So he threatens to lose the duel. However, his IS has the ability to use the shield energy for a special attack that could knock them out with one hit. He succeeds in doing this. Nevertheless, Cecilia is held as the winner because he had first reduced his shields to a critical value and thus violated the rules. However, Cecilia sees the win as a defeat and sees in Ichika the strong man she was looking for. Accordingly, her appearance changes drastically towards him and is now in competition with Hōki for the favor of Ichika.

Now already besieged by two women who envied each other, Huang Lingyin ( 凰 鈴音 , Japanese Fan Rin'in ) of all people enters the school. The very young-looking transfer student from China is extremely happy to see Ichika. After all, she was his best friend during the time he was separated from Hōki. When he was helping her in her old school, she too fell in love with him. At the time, he also made a promise to her, the daughter of a restaurant owner, that he would become her boyfriend when she learned how to cook properly. But he can no longer remember the promise in this form, which quickly turns into anger with her rather aggressive disposition. Like the other two, she doesn't manage to confess her feelings to him either, and tries in a training duel to vent her anger on Ichika. She is also exceptionally talented and specializes in short and medium range attacks. Her medium-range weapons in particular offer her all-round protection, which is why Ichika tries in vain to get closer to her. However, the fight is interrupted by an unknown IS model that has no pilot. Until then, this was considered impossible. But realizing this during combat, they can also use the skills that would be forbidden against human enemies. Accordingly, they manage to put the attacker out of action.

The harem but by Ichika increases in quick succession but even further. With the French Charlotte Dunois ( シ ャ ル ロ ッ ト デ ュ ノ ア , Sharurotto Dunoa ) there is another girl. However, she reveals herself as Charles, as a man, and, like himself, is courted by the female students. Hōki now has to vacate the room in which 'Charles' is supposed to be. In doing so, however, she manages to hide her identity from him. However, the behavior of Charlotte seems strange to Ichika, since she behaves very strangely, especially in the locker room. She also retires to the shared apartment to shower. But this quickly becomes her undoing when Ichika carelessly also enters the shower room and the bare facts stand before him. Shocked by this, Charlotte tells him the real reason why she pretended to be a boy. She herself is the daughter of the French IS manufacturer. However, the company is in a crisis because the development of the third generation of IS is not progressing normally. In order not to lose the funding, they decided to cause a stir by finding another boy who could control an IS. After Ichika has been informed of the truth, he decides to keep silent and takes care of his new roommate, who is only too happy to present herself as weak. B. can be fed.

Origin and publications

The light novel series is written by Izuru Yumizuru . The first issue was published on May 25, 2009 by Media Factory under the imprint MF Bunko J and with the illustrations by Okiura. Before the eighth volume was published, there was a falling out with the publisher, in the course of which Yumizuru went to Overlap , a publisher founded in 2012 by former employees of Media Factory . This then published the eighth volume on April 25, 2013, as well as new editions of the earlier volumes at one-month intervals, although Okiura and his illustrations were replaced by drawings by the illustrator Choco .

So far (as of July 2015) ten individual volumes have been published.
