I Am Heresy was an American metalcore and hardcore punk band from Delaware that was formed in 2011 and disbanded in 2015.

history

The band was formed in 2011 by Boysetsfire singer Nathan Gray . Within a month the band wrote ten songs for their first album. Meanwhile, Nathan Gray's son Simon joined the band as a guitarist. Jonah Latshaw, son of Boysetsfire guitarist Joshua Latshaw, also joined the line-up as a further guitarist. After the self-titled debut was released on Magic Bullet Records in autumn 2012 , it was also released four months later in Europe on End Hits Records in early 2013 . With the bassist Jay Sin, the drummer Crumbs Konieko and the third guitarist Gregg Kautz, the line-up had also been completed. A European tour with Hierophant followed . In March 2013 the EP O Day Star, Son of Dawn was also released with four new songs. In addition, the band went on tour along the east coast of the United States with Vattnet Viskar . Then the band went back to the studio to record the album Thy Will , which was released in 2014 by Century Media . Bassist Jay Sin had meanwhile switched to the electric guitar because Jonah Latshaw had left the band. Matt Balog joined the band as bass player. The release was followed by a US tour with Off with Their Heads , before going on tour through Europe with Wolves Like Us . In October 2015, Gray announced via Facebook that I Am Heresy had split up so that he could devote more time to his solo project and his band Boysetsfire.

style

According to laut.de , in contrast to Boysetsfire, the group deals less with political issues, but rather criticizes religion and questions the existence of God, with singer Gray being an avowed atheist . The songs would be reminiscent of the early works of Boysetsfire as well as Converge and Integrity . Above all, the screaming and the "noisy" electric guitars, which would be reminiscent of Black Metal , are in the foreground. The music is also loosened up by heavy and gloomy acoustics and folk elements. According to Alex Schlage from Ox-Fanzine , the group on I am Heresy mix metallic hardcore of the 1990s and the sound of current bands like Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan . The vocals are a mixture of typical hardcore shouts and deep, subtle growls, also on clear vocals. In addition, female singing was used in an interlude . The band also played metallic hardcore for Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer on the album, whereby the music would be reminiscent of the noise- heavy early works of Boysetsfire. As further comparisons, he used bands like Converge and Integrity. According to Weckmann, influences of Metalcore in the style of bands like Killswitch Engage , Hardcore Punk in the style of Integrity and Noise can be heard on Thy Will . Some riffs on the album would also be reminiscent of Death Metal .
