I Dream Too Much is an American comedy film from the year 1935 of John Cromwell , a story by Elsie Finn and David G. Wittels and the libretto of the opera Lakmé by Philippe Gille and Edmond Gondinet .

action

The music student Annette Monard lives in her uncle's house in the south of France. As she sneaks out of the house, she meets the aspiring American composer Jonathan Street. They go to a fair together. When Jonathan wakes up the next morning, he realizes that he married Annette while drunk. Annette is unfazed by her husband's panic. She convinces him to travel to Paris with her.

Jonathan actually begins to fall in love with Annette. He hears Annette singing something to a boy on a carousel. He encourages her to embark on a singing career. Jonathan works as a tour guide, while Annette works as a cabaret singer. However, her husband is frustrated by the fact that he can not find a producer for his opera Echo and Narcissus . In addition, his pride does not allow his wife to be more successful with her performances than he is.

Annette wants to help Jonathan and shows the opera manuscript to the theater agent Paul Darcy. She gives a few samples from the opera for the best. Darcy is enthusiastic about Annette as a singer and lets her sign a generous contract. But he rejects Jonathan's opera. Annette makes an extremely successful debut. Jonathan learns that Annette has paid an opera house in Monte Carlo to perform his opera. Deeply injured, he leaves Annette.

Annette suffers from the separation and meets an equally suffering Jonathan, who struggles as a taxi driver. The two find each other again, but Jonathan's pride and envy keep the upper hand. He sends her away again. With Darcy's help, Annette can rewrite Jonathan's opera into a musical and stage it in London. After Jonathan is showered with honors, he accepts his entry into the musical world. He and Annette are getting back together. Annette ends her opera career and becomes a simple housewife and mother.
