Richard Carle (born July 7, 1871 in Somerville , Massachusetts , † June 28, 1941 in North Hollywood , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor and theater maker.

Life

Richard Carle initially worked as a newspaper deliverer and singer. Since 1899 he worked as an actor on Broadway , where he appeared in over 20 plays by 1931. In many of his plays - especially musical comedies - Carle also worked in various functions as a producer, director, poet and author.

From 1915 Carle was also active as a film actor. The character actor, who tends to be bald, embodied mostly dignified, occasionally bad-humored figures such as millionaires, bankers, judges or butlers. He played a mad scientist in the Laurel and Hardy comedy Habeas Corpus . He celebrated one of his greatest successes with the Ernst Lubitsch film Ninotschka , in which he played the conservative servant of the Count played by Melvyn Douglas . The white-haired character actor was also used in other Lubitsch films. He worked as an actor in over 135 films until his death.

Carle died of a heart attack in north Hollywood in 1941, shortly before his 70th birthday.
