Morgenrot des Ruhms (Original title: Morning Glory , in Austria The New Face ) is an American film drama from 1933 with Katharine Hepburn . The script is based on a play by Zoë Akins .

action

Ambitious actress Eva Lovelace comes to New York from Vermont to get a role on Broadway. She meets the actor Robert Harley Hedges at the producer Louis Easton. Impressed by his British accent and eyes, she asks him to teach her rhetoric. While Eva and Robert speak, Easton and writer Joseph Sheridan discuss the cast of Sheridan's new comedy "Blue Skies". Easton wants Rita Vernon, who is under contract with him, to play the lead role. When Rita learns that Sheridan is adapting a play by Ferenc Molnár , she wants to read the script. Sheridan is not convinced that Rita can take on the serious lead role. After Rita leaves, Robert introduces Eva. Although Sheridan finds the young actress charming and provocative, Easton doesn't want to know anything about her.

Robert takes Eva to the opening ceremony of "Blue Skies" which is given in Easton's penthouse. Eva, who got a small role in the comedy, drinks herself a little intoxication. She flirts with Easton and plays two small scenes from a Shakespeare play for him. Her performance touches Sherdian, but Easton remains cool and distant. When Sheridan visits Easton the next morning, he is stunned to learn that Easton has slept with Eva but now wants to get rid of her. Sheridan confesses to Easton that he loves Eva. Eva leaves the penthouse without paying attention to the men's feelings.

Several months later, a new piece is due to open. Again Sheridan is the writer, and again Rita is the star. Shortly before the start, Rita Easton confronts horrific demands for the contract extension. Sheridan wants to cast Eva, who plays a small role again, as the main role. Eva saves the performance. Easton looks for her in her locker room. He wants to promote her career, but he doesn't love her. Sheridan tells her he loves her, but she gently rejects him. Eva remains alone in her locker room. Robert once referred to a fallen Broadway star as " Morning Glory, " a flower that blooms brightly but wilts quickly. Eva looks in the mirror and swears not to suffer the same fate.

background

The world premiere took place on August 16, 1933. Zoe Akins' play on which the film is based was not shown for a short time until 1939.

Sidney Lumet staged a remake in 1958 with Henry Fonda and Susan Strasberg in the leading roles under the title One day the door opens ( Stage Struck ) .

Reviews

Variety found the film was not the luckiest choice for Katharine Hepburn. But it would make a strong representation. Even Channel 4 showed restrained. It is true that Hepburn is charming and that Fairbanks jr. and Menjou well supported, but the story is nothing unusual.

Awards

In 1934 , Katharine Hepburn won the first of her four Academy Awards in the Best Actress category .
