Ibicella parodii is one of two plant species of the genus Ibicella in the chamois horn family( Martyniaceae ). It occurs in South America .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Ibicella parodii lives as an annual herbaceous plant . It forms a strong beet root . The stem grows prostrate to upright.

The opposite leaves are ovate, the blades are up to 20 cm long and have entire margins. The tip of the leaf is rounded.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period is between December and April of the following year. An inflorescence is formed. The bracts are elliptical-lanceolate and the bracts are oblong to rounded.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic with a double flower envelope. The sepals are elliptical to lanceolate with a length of up to 1.5 cm. The bell-shaped and two-lipped corolla is 2 to 3.5 cm long and bright yellow. The narrowed part of the corolla tube is 9-10 mm long.

The fruits with sloping pericarp are long beaked. The woody capsule fruit is elongated and without horns up to 8 cm long. It is sparsely covered with thorny or prickly appendages up to 1 cm in length along the ventral and back seams. The curved horns are 1.25 to 1.5 times as long as the capsule, with a distal process of incompletely rising tissue between the two horns. The seeds with a corky seed coat are black and triangular in shape.

ecology

Ibicella parodii , like its very close relative Ibicella lutea, is likely to be precarious .

Occurrence

Ibicella parodii grows exclusively on the eastern foothills of the Andes in Argentina , Bolivia and on the extreme western border of Paraguay . It thrives mainly in open and sunny, semi-arid and salt deserts, for example in the Gran Chaco region in Paraguay.

Systematics

Ibicella parodii was discovered by Delia Abbiatti in 1938 . The generic name Ibicella is borrowed from the Latin word Ibex for "ibex" and refers to the curved horns of the capsule fruits. The species name honors the Argentine botanist Lorenzo Raimundo Parodi .

Ibicella parodii looks quite similar to its sister species, Ibicella lutea , especially in terms of its flowers (both species are yellow-flowered) and the capsule fruits. However, Ibicella parodii initially differs from Ibicella lutea by the additional extension between the "horns" of the capsule. Furthermore carries Ibicella lutea larger flowers. In addition, the range of occurrence of both species differs.

Trivial names for Ibicella parodii ( Abbiatti ) are Devil's Claw, Pepino silvestre, Cuerno del diablo.
