Ich räum auf is a German film essay from 1979 based on the eponymous pamphlet by the expressionist poet Else Lasker-Schüler .
action
The Jewish poet Else Lasker-Schüler felt driven by justice at the beginning of the twenties and, regardless of her as yet unprinted works, did away with her publishers, who she believed were being exploited in a shameful manner. Karl Marx and his theories about surplus value seem to have been their godfather: “A writer is a productive worker, not in so far as he produces ideas, but in so far as he enriches the bookseller who publishes his writings, or if he is the wage worker of a capitalist is. ”She takes on three publishers in particular: the main publisher Paul Cassirer , the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim and the publisher Kurt Wolff . She meets them in her offices, privately or in the Romanisches Café in Berlin. All three publishers became millionaires before the First World War and allegedly enriched themselves with their “innermost possessions”. Else Lasker-Schüler herself lives in great poverty and is forced to steal her own books from the counter. Yes, she has to live in a dark basement, cover herself with bed rugs at night so as not to freeze. She even thinks of drowning herself in the Spree. But she fails to do so because her publishers would only welcome suicide as a stately advertisement. It seems more sensible to her to ask all other poets and writers to organize themselves like the workers. The poetry of all poets cannot possibly belong to only one money man; it belongs to all of humanity. In order to sensitize her poet friends and the people to this goal, Else Lasker-Schüler drives through the cities with her pamphlet and reads it publicly.
Movie title
The film title is also the title of Else Lasker-Schüler's indictment: I'll clean up! My charges against my publishers. The brochure was published under this title by Lago in Zurich in 1925.
Reviews
“Georg Brintrup's film 'Ich räum auf' is set in Berlin in the 1920s and is closely based on Else Lasker-Schüler's lawsuit against her publishers. Film images are combined with written language carefully and with great precision; a very poetic film - with a gesture of 'heroic realism', which currently thematizes the form of exploitation and corruption of aesthetic production that no genre of works of art can escape.
