action

Greg Gaines is a student at Benson High School. A social loner, he navigates high school life by making the acquaintance of everyone but staying away from certain cliques. His only real friend is Earl Jackson, although Greg claims they are just coworkers. Greg and Earl, a fellow student from a poor and broken family, have been friends since childhood. The two spend most of their time making films together. Greg and Earl keep their filming a secret from their peers and fear ridicule for their mediocre projects.

One day Greg's mother tells him that his childhood friend Rachel Kushner was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Greg's mom wants him to revive their friendship and make her feel better. Even though Greg only befriended Rachel to get closer to her more attractive friend Leah Katzenberg, he realizes that he can't argue with his mother and calls her. This leads to a delicate conversation between the two. Greg is ready to give up, but his mother forces him to see Rachel. Eventually Greg and Rachel spend more time together.
