Map of Ichaboe Island |
Ichaboe Island , formerly German name Itschabo Island , forms together with Little Ichaboe Island a small rock island group 48 kilometers north of the Lüderitz Bay in Namibia. It belongs to the Penguin Islands . The island is part of the Meob-Chamais marine reserve .
Ichaboe is almost completely enclosed by a flood wall and serves as a base for scientists. There is also a weather station here . Guano has been mined on Ichaboe Island since 1843 .
geography
The 6.5 hectare island is located in the northern Douglas Bay (potato bay ) 1.3 km off the Namibian coast in Namibia (south of Wreck Point). The island measures 425 meters from north to south and is up to 200 meters wide. In the southeast it reaches its maximum height of seven meters (Mount Stromboli). The island consists mainly of granite .
In the northeast is a small, only temporarily inhabited settlement, the "Observation Village".
history
The island was discovered in 1828 by Captain Benjamin Morrell.
On June 21, 1861 Ichaboe was declared British territory and in 1867 eleven other islands known as the Penguin Islands were annexed by Great Britain . In 1874 sovereign rights over the annexed areas were transferred to the Cape Colony , which kept these islands (and the Walvis Bay enclave ) on the mainland even after the German protected area Deutsch-Südwestafrika was founded . In 1921, Walvis Bay and the islands came completely to South Africa until they were returned to Namibia on February 28, 1994.
