The Ichetucknee River is a river in the state of Florida in the United States .
etymology
The name is probably derived from a Muskogee language , possibly from Creek hvcce-tuccenē "three brooks". Another widely used translation is "beaver pond", derived from Ue - "water" and Ecas - "beaver". The anthropologist John Reed Swanton translated Oetcotukni from ue-cutoknē "lumpy water".
geography
Ichetucknee Springs
The Ichetucknee River rises from several karst springs , the Ichetucknee Springs in the approximately 9 km² Ichetucknee Springs State Park . The springs are east of Branford in Suwannee and Columbia Counties . The Ichetucknee River largely forms the county boundary. Florida State Road 238 runs north of it.
The largest springs are the main spring called Headspring , Blue Spring and Devils Eye Spring . Other sources include Roaring Springs , Singing Springs , Boiling Spring , Grassy Hole Springs , Mill Pond Spring , and Coffee Spring . All sources pour 10,220 l / s together.
In the early 1990s, the springs showed signs of progressive deterioration in water quality.
course
The Ichetucknee River runs primarily to the southwest, crosses under US Highway 27 and flows into the Santa Fe River . The three counties Suwannee , Columbia and Gilchrist meet at the mouth .
Data
The Ichetucknee River is 6.1 m wide and 1.5 m deep on its 9.7 km. Thanks to the fresh spring water, the river is crystal clear and has a temperature of 22 ° C all year round.
