Ida Valeton (born May 26, 1922 in Hamburg ; † April 4, 2016 in Braunschweig ; née Meggendorfer ) was a German scientist . She was head of the sediment petrographic laboratory of the Geological Paleontological Institute of the University of Hamburg and held various visiting professorships.

Her scientific focus was on sediment and bauxite research .

Career

Ida Valeton was born in 1922 as the eldest daughter of Ina and Friedrich Meggendorfer . In 1935 the family moved to Erlangen after their father was appointed professor of psychiatry at the university there. During the Second World War she studied in Erlangen, Munich and Graz .

After completing her doctorate in geology with Franz Heritsch at the University of Graz in 1944 , Ida Valeton began her scientific career with Carl Wilhelm Correns in the mineralogy department of the University of Göttingen . From 1948 to 1952 she worked as an assistant of Adolf worm in the Department of Geology of the University of Würzburg . She then moved to the order, a laboratory for sediment petrography build up in the Geological State Institute Hamburg, later Geological-Palaeontological Institute in the Department of Geology at the University of Hamburg, where they are in the summer of 1957 habilitated . In 1964 she was appointed professor . In 1967 she was appointed to the editorial board of Sedimentary Geology .

In 1963 and 1964 she worked as a visiting professor at the Geological Institute in Bordeaux . Further stays abroad took her to India , Africa and South America . In the summer of 1974 she took part in Egon T. Degens ' 1st Lake Van expedition and studied the terrace sediments of the East Anatolian Soda Lake. As an internationally recognized expert on bauxite, she retired from the University of Hamburg in 1987.
