Ida from Nivelles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ida von Nivelles OCist (* around 1190 in Nivelles ; † December 11, 1231 in Rameige, today Jauchelette, district of Jodoigne ) was a beatified Dutch nun and mystic .

Ida came from a merchant family. When she was about to be married against her will at the age of nine after the death of her father, she fled to a community of beguines , celibate women who were not members of a religious community . This beguinage consisted of seven women and lived near the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in their hometown Nivelles. Around 1213, however, Ida entered the Cistercian monastery in Kerkom , which was later moved to Rameige / La Ramée . There she worked as a writer and illuminator. Ida reported on numerous visions and experiences that are attributed to women's mysticism , including journeys to the hereafter, encounters with Christ, etc. She is considered to be miraculous and a benefactress of the poor.

In the Catholic Church she is venerated as a blessed . Her feast day is December 12th.

Ida should not be confused with Saint Iduberga of Nivelles († May 8, 652), the founder of Nivelles Abbey and mother of Gertrud von Nivelles .
