The Frienstein , also known as the front robbery castle , is a rock about 130 m high in Saxon Switzerland . It is located on the northern slope of the Großer Winterberg in the Affensteinen and belongs to the Ostrau district . There was once a keeper of the Wildenstein rule on the rock . Today the Frienstein is a popular climbing peak .

history

Around 1410, the Wildenstein lordship on the Frienstein, owned by the Berken von der Duba, set up a castle watch as a signaling station. From the Frienstein, it was possible to contact the surrounding castle keepers on the Winterstein , the New Wildenstein and the Old Wildenstein . In 1451 the Frienstein came together with the entire rule to the Wettins and thus to the Electorate of Saxony . In the period that followed, robber barons settled on the Frienstein, and in 1479 one of their helpers admitted that item at Freynstein is a hole ... to peyn the trapped people . On the first complete map of Saxony in 1592 by Matthias Oeder , the rock is noted as Freystein .

In today's climbing route Alter Weg, there are still folds and steps carved into the rock, over which the ascent once led. Traces of the castle guard can also be found on the summit surface in the form of folds to anchor a wooden guardroom. On the east side, at the foot of the rock, there is the Idagrotte , also known as the Frienstein cave , a large crevice and layer joint cave , which is now a popular destination. It can only be reached via a narrow ledge. In the cave there are also traces of medieval use as living space. It is listed in the Saxon cave cadastre under the number 5051 SH-04.

Due to its size and easy accessibility, the Idagrotte is a popular destination for boofers , and in recent years there have been repeated accidents with serious injuries or death due to falling drunken participants.

Climbing summit

The Frienstein is a popular climbing summit in the Saxon Switzerland climbing area ; the summit plateau is not accessible for hikers and walkers. As early as 1873, the first athletic ascent of the rock, which had already been climbed with artificial aids, took place. The route, known today as the Alter Weg , has a degree of difficulty III. Meanwhile, there are paths on the Frienstein with climbing difficulties up to difficulty level XIb. Climbing history was written on the Königshangel , where level IX of difficulty was reached for the first time in Saxon Switzerland. Fritz Eske made the first successful ascent in 1965 , after several unsuccessful attempts by other well-known climbers.
