Ignatius Pierre VIII. Abdel-Ahad , real name Grégoire Pierre Abdel-Ahad , (born June 28, 1930 in Aleppo , Syria , † April 4, 2018 in Jerusalem ) was Archbishop of Beirut and Patriarch of the Syrian Catholic Church united with Rome of Antioch.

Life

Grégoire Pierre Abdel-Ahad entered the minor seminary of the St. Ephrem-St.-Benoît seminary of the French Benedictines in Jerusalem in 1944 and, after its relocation, studied philosophy and theology at the Convent of Charfet (Šarfeh), Lebanon, from 1949 to 1955 . He received on October 17, 1954 among others Ignatius Moussa I Daoud Cardinal , by the Patriarch I. Ignatius Gabriel Cardinal Tappouni in the St. George Cathedral in Beirut , the ordination . From 1955 to 1965 he taught in Charfet's patriarchal seminary and was also its economist. Pope John Paul II named him titular bishop of Batnae dei Siri in 1996 and appointed him auxiliary bishop of Antioch and patriarchal exarch of Jerusalem with responsibility for the Syrian Catholic believers in Israel, Jordan and Palestine. The episcopal ordination received his Bishop Ignatius Antoine II. Hayek , patriarch of the Syrian Catholic Church of Antioch, on June 21, 1997 in Assumption Cathedral in Aleppo.

On 16 February 2001, he was of the Syrian Catholic Synod of Bishops in Charfet (Šarfeh), Lebanon, succeeding I. Ignatius Moussa Daoud , the prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches was appointed to the Patriarch of Antioch and the whole East elected . After Pope John Paul II had offered him communion ( communio ecclesiaticae ) on February 24, 2001 (thus confirmed him), Abdel-Ahad was enthroned on the following day in the cathedral by the Annunciation in Beirut.
