Ijoukak ( Arabic اجوكاك, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵉⵊⵓⴽⴰⴽ Ijukak ) is a Berbersdorf ( douar ) with about 1,500 and the capital of a rural community ( commune rurale ) with 7,000 inhabitants on the north edge of the High Atlas in the province of Al Haouz in the region Marrakech-Safi in Morocco .

location

The town, located about 1300  m above sea level, is located about 130 kilometers (driving distance) south of the city of Marrakech or about 30 kilometers northeast of the Tizi n'Test Pass about 500 m south of the narrow and winding mountain road R203, which connects Marrakech with Taroudannt . The Oued Nfiss flows at the bottom of the valley .

Population and economy

Almost exclusively Berber families live in the village and its surroundings, who used to make a living from farming, but mainly from cattle breeding (sheep and goats). As a result of the increasing traffic on the asphalted R203 and the construction of smaller guest houses ( gîtes ) and hotels for trekking tourists, the character of the place has changed significantly since the 1980s. Ijoukak is the last major station before the top of the Tizi n'Test and so there are many simple restaurants and cafes here; there are also some souvenir shops selling Berber jewelry and / or minerals.

history

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ijoukak was dominated by the Goundafa Berber tribe who controlled the region .

Attractions

  • Ijoukak is dominated by Agadir n'Gouf , a fortress ( kasbah ) built by the Goundafa clan at the beginning of the 20th century .
  • Only a few houses a little further away from the street show the traditional mortarless natural stone masonry with flat roofs made of wickerwork; More and more new houses made of hollow blocks with concrete ceilings are taking their place .
  • The place Tinmal with its Almohad mosque is only about 6 km southwest.
  • Jbel Toubkal, which is 4167 m high and about 25 km to the east, can be easily reached on mountain hikes and trekking tours.
