Iko Maran

Iko Maran (* February 26 jul. / 11. March  1915 greg. In Pskov ; † 12. November 1999 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian playwright and youth book author.

Life

Maran's father died as a soldier in World War I and in 1922 Maran left Russia . He went to school in Härgla in the parish of Juuru and in Tallinn, where he graduated from high school in 1935. From 1936 to 1940 he studied law at the University of Tartu . 1940–1941 and 1945–1951 he worked for the Estonian Radio . In the meantime, d. H. during the German occupation of Estonia, he ate odd jobs. He then worked at various Tallinn theaters as a literary director and dramaturge.

Maran has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Association since 1958 and of the Estonian Theater Association since 1967.

Literary work

Maran began his writing work together with Bernhard Lülle . Under the pseudonym Lall Kahas they wrote a play that was premiered in Valga in 1946 . It was printed that year, and other plays, both for adults and children, followed.

In 1949, the two authors wrote their first children's book together, which was followed by three more. Her books meant "a broadening of the horizons of reading opportunities for the Estonian child". This was certainly also due to the fact that her story Die Freunde dealt with the high school years of the 1930s, which was by no means depicted in pitch-black tones, as would actually have been expected under Stalinism .

From 1964 Iko Maran wrote his books alone and only published them under his own name. With this he achieved his greatest successes, above all with the art fairy tale Der Elefant Londiste (1972) and its sequel Warmes Eis (1978).

Maran's books have been translated into several languages. He himself translated from Russian.
