Ilama ( Annona macroprophyllata Donn.Sm. , Syn. : Annona diversifolia . Saff ) is a tree from the family of annonaceous . The fruits of this tree are distinguished by their pink pulp with a creamy consistency.

features

The tree reaches a height of 7.5 meters and often branches out at the bottom. The bark is aromatic and brownish gray. The leaves are shiny, thin, and five to 15 inches long. They are elliptical to obovat. There are one or two bracts that are 2.5 to 3.5 inches long.

The young leaves are reddish to copper-colored. The flowers are solitary on long stalks and are maroon brown. The sepals are small and hairy. The outer petals are narrow, blunt and hairy, the inner ones are stamen-like and carry pollen.

The fruit is conical, heart-shaped or egg-shaped and around 15 centimeters long. It weighs up to 0.9 kilograms. It is covered with triangular protrusions. The green to pink or purple fruit peel is covered with a velvety, gray-white hoop. The fruit peel is 6 millimeters thick. Green fruits have a white and sweet pulp, pink fruits have a more or less pink and sour pulp. The pulp contains 25 to 80 hard, brown seeds about one by two centimeters in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Ilama is native to the hills on the southwest coast of Mexico as far as Guatemala , El Salvador , Honduras and Nicaragua . The tree is restricted to the tropics . The tree is also planted in its area of ​​origin. Of course it only occurs up to an altitude of 610 m, but in Guatemala it is still planted at 1800 m. It grows best in locations with pronounced rainy and dry seasons.

The fruits are used as fruit. The pulp is eaten raw. Usually the fruit halves are spooned out, as the pulp tastes unpleasant on the outer edge.
