Ilan Goldfajn (born March 12, 1966 in Haifa ) is an Israeli - Brazilian economist and university professor. From June 9, 2016 to February 28, 2019, he was President of the Central Bank of Brazil .

Life

Ilan Goldfajn, born in Haifa, first attended the Colégio Israelita Brasileiro A. Liessin in Rio de Janeiro . He graduated in 1988 with a degree in economics from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), which was followed by a master's degree in 1991 from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). In 1995 he received his Ph.D. (PhD) in On Public Debt and Exchange Rate from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

His academic and political career began in 1995 when he became an assistant professor at Brandeis University in Waltham , Massachusetts. From 1996 to January 1999, he held a position as an economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). From February 1999 to April 2009 he was Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Economics at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. He has held advisory positions at the World Bank , the IMF, international and Brazilian banks. From September 2000 to July 2003 he was Director of Economic Policy at the Brazilian Central Bank. He was chief economist and partner of Itaú Unibanco from April 2009 to May 2016 , before the Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles , who had worked with him a few years earlier, appointed him head of the central bank within the new government of Michel Temer on May 12, 2016 . On June 9, 2016, he replaced his predecessor Alexandre Tombini .

He was also a member of the subsequent cabinet of the new President Jair Bolsonaro from January 1, 2019 to February 28, 2019, before being replaced by Roberto de Oliveira Campos Neto .

Goldfajn is faced with the economic crisis in Brazil from 2014 . In March 2017, he said that "lowering the inflation rate is already widespread in the economy".
