Henrique de Campos Meirelles (born August 31, 1945 in Anápolis , Goiás ) is a Brazilian banker and since 2018 a politician of the MDB , formerly President of Banco Central do Brasil and since 2016 Minister of Finance of Brazil. He is considered an excellent financial professional and is Chairman of the Board of J&F Investimentos , the largest private business group in Brazil, and a member of the Board of Directors of Azul Airlines . Meirelles is strongly influenced by the US and is considered to be the central pawn of the US economy in Brazil.

Life

Professional career

His family has held high political offices as state officials for generations. Henrique Meirelles first studied civil engineering at the Polytechnic School of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) from 1972 and in 1974 did an MBA in Business Administration from the Instituto Coppead da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He attended the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at Harvard Business School in 1984 and received an honorary doctorate from Bryant College .

Meirelles began his professional career in 1974 at FleetBoston in Boston , Massachusetts , at that time one of the oldest banks in the world, of which he became President in the Brazilian branch from 1984. After establishing BankBoston Corp. he went back to the United States and was CEO of FleetBoston Financial between 1996 and 1999 . In 1999 BankBoston Corp. merged. with FleetBoston and he became COO of the global banking business from 1999 . Meirelles had spent a total of 28 years at the American bank. In 2002 he retired from business life.

Political career

In 2002 he started his political career, ran for the state of Goiás and was elected as senator for the PSDB in the national congress with over 183,000 votes . A year later he became President of the Central Bank of Brazil , from January 2003 to November 2010, under President Lula da Silva . He is still considered to be the guarantor of Lula's successful economic policy during his first term in office.

After his retirement from the Lula government in 2010, Meirelles built up the holding company for the Brazilian meat empire JBS , founded its house bank and acted as a lobbyist for the largest private empire in Brazil - in the country and especially in the USA, where the Brazilian group is the leading meat processor. Meirelles has ties to the US financial world because of his CEO job on Wall Street . He also sits on several boards of directors, including at Lloyds in London , whose seat he relinquished in May 2016 when he became Minister of Finance. In April 2018 he handed over the office of finance minister to his successor.

Henrique Meirelles ran for the Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB, until 2017 PMDB) for the presidential election in Brazil in 2018 .

Private

Henrique de Campos Meirelles has been married to the German-born psychotherapist Eva Missine since 2000.
