René-Ildefonse Dordillon
René-Ildefonse Dordillon SSCC , (born October 14, 1808 , Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine , France , † January 11, 1888 , Taiohae , Polynesia ) was a Catholic priest of the Pères et religieuses des Sacrés-Cœurs de Picpus , missionary , Bishop of Taiohae ( Marquesas Islands) and eminent linguist .
biography
He was a cousin of Mgr Joseph François-de-Paul Baudichon SSCC, the first bishop of the Marquesas Islands. He was ordained a priest in 1832 and joined the Pères et religieuses des Sacrés-Cœurs de Picpus in 1836 . In 1845 he was transferred to the Marquesas and appointed Vicar Apostolic in 1856 ; on February 4, 1857 he was appointed titular bishop of Cambysopolis ( Alexandrette ). He was in office for over 30 years. At times he was supported by the Commissaire impérial Louis Eugène Gaultier de La Richerie and he succeeded in establishing cotton plantations and enriching the flora of the Marquesas with several new plant species: fig , pomegranate and vanilla . His work on the grammar of Marquesan "Grammaire et Dictionnaire de la langue des îles Marquises" is a standard work to this day.
