location

The wetland is located immediately south of the Ilkerbruch settlement, which is part of the Fallersleben district of Wolfsburg . Furthermore, the Ilkerbruch lies south of the Barnbruch wetland . The north side of the area is bordered by the sometimes heavily trafficked district road 114 ("Nordtangente"). There is heavy commuter traffic to the nearby Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg , particularly during rush hour . The border in the south is formed by the high-speed railway line Hanover-Berlin and the Mittelland Canal with the Sülfeld lock . A few kilometers east in the direction of Wolfsburg, south and north of the K 114, lies the Düpenwiesen wetland .

description

The Ilkerbruch consists of larger areas of water with shallow water areas and reed areas, wet grassland and alder-like forest stands. An Agenda 21 project with rear cattle and Konik ponies as grazing animals has been run on meadows in the Ilkerbruch since 2001 . The animals keep the grass growth low by grazing. The 40 hectare site used for this was bought and leased by Volkswagen AG as compensation for the expansion of the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. An approximately six kilometer long nature trail leads around the Ilkerbruch nature reserve. There are stations with information boards on various topics. Visitors can observe water birds on several observation platforms and from a 12 m high observation tower .

fauna and Flora

Because of the large expanses of water and the surrounding grassland, the Ilkerbruch is of great importance for breeding and resting birds. There are among other things the bag tit , snipe , sea eagle , black-necked and red-necked grebe and duck species such as the pintail and the shoveler .

settlement

Access to the Ilkerbruch settlement

The Ilkerbruch settlement, which today comprises around nine residential buildings, is politically part of Fallersleben, but postally belongs to Sülfeld . In the 1930s in the Barnbruch wetland , in the area of the later settlement, about three meters high excavation from the construction of the Mittelland Canal and the Sülfeld lock was heaped up. The settlement was founded in 1938 and the first farm was built in 1939. Before that, the area called Ilker- Bruch was undeveloped and belonged to the Fallersleben forest . In 1948/49, six more courtyards were built by expellees from the eastern German territories . On July 1, 1972, the city of Fallersleben, and with it the Ilkerbruch settlement, was incorporated into the city of Wolfsburg. Previously, Ilkerbruch belonged to the Gifhorn district . The district road 114 ("Nordtangente") has been running past the southern edge of the settlement since the 1970s, previously the settlement was accessible from Sülfeld and Allerbüttel .
