The Barnstorfer Wald is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city of Wolfsburg .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 154 is about 522 hectares . In the south it borders on the nature reserve " Talniederung im Barnstorfer Wald ". The area has been under nature protection since January 20, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Wolfsburg.
The nature reserve is located southeast of Wolfsburg. It puts the Barnstorfer Wald, a deciduous and mixed forest in a gently undulating area under protection. The forest communities are formed by near-natural beech , oak-hornbeam and oak-birch forests on dry to moist locations as well as alder and alder-ash forests on moist to wet locations. There are also pine, spruce , larch , Douglas fir and hybrid poplar stands. In the long term, the softwood stocks are to be converted into hardwood stocks. The forests with oak-rich old wood stocks and a high proportion of lying and standing dead wood have a species-rich layer of shrubs and herbs . In places there are clearings embedded in the woods. In the Barnstorfer Wald there are headwaters and small streams with narrow valleys, as well as wetlands with still waters, swamps , reed beds , riparian perennials , wet bushes and scraps of woodland . The streams are close to nature with natural flow dynamics. They have a structured river bed and form pools or scouring .
The area is with its different biotopes habitat u. a. of red deer , wild cat , black stork , Crane , Middle Spotted Woodpecker , Gray-headed woodpecker , oriole , nightingale , spotted flycatcher , spotted salamander , grass snake , crested newt , moor frog , grass frog and Marsh Grasshopper . The fire salamander lives here in one of its largest populations in Lower Saxony.
In the north, a connecting road between Barnstorf and Waldhof crosses the protected area. Otherwise it is criss-crossed by forest roads that can also be used for local recreation . Parts of the protected area are closed from mid-February to mid-August to protect the sometimes sensitive animal world from disturbances.
The nature reserve merges into further forests in the west, south-east and south. Otherwise it borders on agricultural land . In the north it borders in places on Barnstorf and Waldhof.
