Iller ( German  Iller ) is a Danish village that belongs to the Sønderborg municipality on the Flensburg Fjord . It belongs to Broager Sogn .

location

The village is located south of Broager , north of Brunsnæs and northwest of Skelde (Sønderborg Kommune) . The street names of the village are: Illervej ( location ), Illerstrandvej ( location ) and Slotsvej ( location ). The Slotsvej also refers to the Iller Slot . The coastal section of the Iller beach has a length of about 1200 meters.

background

The area around Iller was shaped by the Ice Age . The background to the naming of the place is unclear. Iller was already listed by name on a map by cartographer Franz Geerz from 1858. A school was established near Iller as early as the 18th century. Several brickworks were set up on the coast of the Iller Strand in the 18th century . The brick industry was an old, important branch of the economy in the Flensburg area. In its heyday, there were a total of more than 70 brickworks on the fjord. There were eight brickworks at Iller Strand in the wedding. The most famous of these was the Cathrinesminde brickworks , founded in 1732 , which closed in 1968 and now serves as a museum. The Iller Slot is reminiscent of what was once the most modern brick factory, the Teglværk Matzen . On the Iller Strand stretch of coast, there are information boards at the former brickworks' locations, which point out the remains of the former brickworks.

Iller slot

The Iller Slot ( German  Iller Castle ) was originally a castle-like factory owner's villa owned by the brickworks owner Nicolai August Matzen. Matzens Ziegelei was founded in 1750 with the approval of the Glücksburg Duke ( Lage ). At the end of the 19th century, the Matzens brickworks with a gas-fired ring kiln and a steam engine was the most advanced on the Flensburg Fjord. During this time, Nicolai August Matzen had a villa built above the brickworks, the so-called Iller Slot. At the access path to the brickworks, the path leads past the south side of the Iller slot, Matzen did not have any windows installed. His relationship with his workers should not have been ideal. He didn't want to see her from home. Matzen was also a member of the district assembly and the Schleswig-Holstein provincial assembly . After Nicolai August Matzen's death in 1899, his wife Elisabeth Conradine Langenheime Matzen became the owner of the brickworks. The brick factory ran into financial difficulties. The widow Matzen had the brickworks sold. The Matzen brickworks was finally shut down in 1913. In 1917/18 the production building was demolished.

In the 1950s the Iller Slot increasingly disintegrated. In the early seventies, new owners painted the walls of the villa with plastic paint. In the time that followed, this meant that the masonry could no longer breathe and became increasingly damp. The outside bricks burst and could hardly be saved. Since the early 1980s, the villa has apparently been gradually renovated. Today's Iller Slot is a modern building, which basically only shows the shape of the old building ( location ), similar to the case of the Kiel Castle . Today there are also windows on the south side mentioned. Today the Iller Slot serves as a guesthouse for hikers and cycle tourists on the Gendarme Path .
