Ashley Illma Gore (born March 2, 1992 ) is an American - Australian artist .

Life

Ashley Illma Gore was born as the daughter of Australian real estate developer Mike Gore and his third American wife, Karin. Gore has a twin sister and two half brothers. In 1994, her father died of a heart attack after his real estate business collapsed and the family moved to Canada. Her mother, who is said to have suffered from depression and died in 2009, then moved to Australia. In Ashmore, a district of Gold Coast City in Queensland , Gore attended Trinity Lutheran College. She was homeless for a while when she was eleven. In 2012 she studied the diploma subject Interactive Digital Media . Gore has lived and worked as a performance artist in Los Angeles , California since 2016 .

In March 2016, Gore changed the short text about herself on her own website (“Everything is Art”) to Gender Fluid Futurist (for example: “ Futurist with flowing gender identity ”), press articles also quoted this. A few months later, Gore changed the text again: "I believe that art is not a thing - it is a way." In recent press reports, a non-binary gender identity is not mentioned. Gore's self-image changed every few months until she left the website in 2019.

Artistic career

Gore's art, which expresses itself in particular through drawing , street art and body art and is based on the work of Marina Abramović and Christian Boltanski , she developed as an autodidact ; She does not have a classical art education. As an artist, Gore rose to fame in 2013 when she cycled bare chested through Brisbane in her performance Marriage Equality . She used the exposed skin on her back as a picture surface for the inscription My shirt didn't match my rights. This saying - in German my shirt does not correspond to my rights - referred to Tony Abbott , then the leading candidate of the Liberal Party of Australia for the office of Australian Prime Minister , who had rejected the question of the introduction of same-sex marriage .

In 2015, Gore went public through the Tattoo Me campaign , which was invited to use Gore's body for tattoos . For a payment of $ 10 in favor of a homeless aid organization, strangers could also determine strange and banal texts and images that were immortalized in Gore's skin as a “human canvas”. Initially limited to total proceeds of $ 6,000, Gore expanded the crowdfunding for this promotion to $ 17,500.

Gore finally became internationally known for the colored pencil drawing Make America Great Again , which is valued for one million US dollars in a London gallery and exhibited for sale after two attempts to sell the picture on the eBay portal failed due to shutdown and several US galleries had refused to exhibit it. The drawing, which has been banned from Facebook and other media and which it claims to have resulted in a variety of death threats, prosecution and threats under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and a face injury as a result of a physical assault on a Trump supporter, represents it in the United States the US presidential candidate Donald Trump as an act with a tiny penis . The title of the picture is identical to the slogan of Trump's election campaign ( Make America Great Again ). On her website she wrote:

"'Make America Great Again' was created to evoke a reaction from its audience, good or bad, about the significance we place on our physical selves. One should not feel emasculated by their penis size or vagina, as it does not define who you are. Your genitals do not define your gender, your power, or your status. Simply put, you can be a massive prick, despite what is in your pants. "

“Make America Great Again” was created to elicit a positive or negative reaction from the audience, a response that indicates the importance we attach to our physical selves. One should not determine one's gender or identity by the size of the penis or vagina; the genitals do not define gender, strength or status. In a nutshell: Regardless of what you have in your pants, you can be a big ass. "
