Ilona Freyer

Ilona Freyer-Denecke , née Ilona Denecke (born September 2, 1943 in Dessau , † December 1, 1984 in Berlin ), was a German stage and costume designer , painter and draftsman.

Ilona Freyer initially trained as a costume tailor and then studied at the Weissensee School of Art in East Berlin and began her professional career as a set designer in Magdeburg . She then worked at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and for the Berliner Ensemble .

In 1972 she went to the West with her husband Achim Freyer . She often worked for the director Niels-Peter Rudolph , for example in 1975 in the performance of Friedrich Wolf's Cyankali at the Staatstheater Stuttgart , Chekhov's Uncle Vanja in 1976 at the Schlossparktheater , the world premiere of Brasch's Lovely Rita at the Schiller Theater and the world premiere of Reinshagens Leben und Tod der Marilyn Monroe 1978 in the same place.

She was also responsible for setting up Tolstoy's Power of Darkness in 1976 at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus and for several productions by Claus Peymann at the Stuttgart State Theater : Die Gerechten (1976), Iphigenie auf Tauris (1977), Drei Schwestern (1978), and Woyzeck (1974) ), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1977), Herbert Achternbusch's Ella (1978) and Jean Genet's The Balcony (1979). Ilona Freyer, who was visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts , last designed the costumes for Achim Freyer's production of the opera Akhenaten by Philip Glass in 1984 .

In addition to her work as a set designer, Ilona Freyer made watercolors, gouaches and (pastel) drawings that deal primarily with people in old people's homes and hospitals. In 1986 her works from 1973 to 1984 were shown in the solo exhibition “Hidden Faces or with Hand and Foot” in the festival gallery of the Berliner Festwochen in Berlin.
