Methylthymol blue is a chemical compound from the group of triphenylmethane dyes . It is used as an indicator substance that changes its color depending on the pH value from red to yellow to blue. Methylthymol blue sodium salt , also known as water-soluble methylthymol blue , is a brownish- green solid that is used as an indicator for metal titration (e.g. for lead and uranium).

Methylthymol blue or methylthymol blue sodium salt solutions can be used for the determination of many metals ( titration to complex compounds ) and sulfate . The complexes formed by metals with methylthymol blue are generally blue in color. The barium salt of methylthymol blue is used to detect magnesium.
