Ilse Helbrecht (born February 27, 1964 in Stuttgart ) is a German geographer , urban researcher and university lecturer at the Humboldt University of Berlin .

Live and act

Helbrecht was born in Stuttgart, but grew up in Osnabrück . From 1983 she studied geography, sociology, spatial planning and administrative law at the University of Münster . There she obtained her diploma in geography in 1990. She then worked as a research assistant at the Geography Institute at the Technical University of Munich . There she was in 1993 with a thesis on urban marketing for Dr. phil. PhD. From 1994 to 1996 she worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of British Columbia . After her return to Germany in 1997 she became a research assistant at the Technical University of Munich and qualified as a professor in 1999 with the thesis “The creative Metropolis” .

From 1999 to 2002 Helbrecht was a private lecturer at the Institute for Geography at the Technical University of Munich. After a visiting professorship at the University of Amsterdam in February 2002, she became full professor of human geography at the University of Bremen in the same year . There she was Vice Dean for the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2003 to 2005 and Vice Rector of the University from 2005 to 2008 . In 2009 she moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin , where she has held the chair for cultural and social geography at the Institute of Geography. From 2010 to 2014 she was director of studies and teaching at the Institute of Geography, and from 2015 to 2017 director of the entire institute. From 2014 to 2019 she was also director of the Georg Simmel Center for Metropolitan Research at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In 2018 she was awarded the Caroline von Humboldt Professorship endowed with € 80,000. In 2019 she became a Thomas Mann Fellow of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Helbrecht's research focuses primarily on urban geography, human and social geography , especially in relation to housing and property relations.
