Immaculata Baumann

Immaculata Baumann OCist (born May 16, 1907 in Bruchsal , † October 23, 1992 in Waldsassen ) was a German religious and abbess of the Waldsassen monastery from 1974 to 1992.

Life

Born as Hildegard Gertraud Baumann, she attended the humanistic Schönborn-Gymnasium Bruchsal after primary school , where she was the only female member of her class to take the Abitur in 1925. In 1932, after studying philology and education, she entered the Cistercian Abbey of Waldsassen , where she took the religious name Maria Immaculata. During the Nazi dictatorship, she had to interrupt her work as a teacher at the girls' elementary school. She was then administrator of the monastery mill, prefect of the boarding school, prioress and cellarain. On August 24, 1974, she was elected third abbess by the convent. The consecration was carried out by the Regensburg Bishop Rudolf Graber and in the presence of Abbot General Sighard Kleiner . As abbess, she carried out various renovations, including the library room. She has received various high-ranking awards for her cultural commitment. The funeral was carried out by Bishop Manfred Müller , who duly paid tribute to her services.
