Imouzzer des Ida-Outanane or Immouzer Ida ou Tanane ( Taschelhit ⵉⵎⵓⵣⴻⵔ ⵉⴷⴰ ⵓ ⵜⴰⵏⴰⵏⴻ ) is a mountain oasis and rural community in the Souss-Massa region in southwestern Morocco with around 5,400 inhabitants .
location
Imouzzer is located on the Assif Tinkert river in a high valley in the western foothills of the High Atlas, about 56 kilometers by road northeast of Agadir . The approach, which is also used by buses, leads via the coastal town of Aourir, north of Agadir, and from there in a north-easterly direction over a winding route along the Oued Assersif .
population
The population consists mainly of Berbers from the Ida Ou Tanane tribe ( Taschelhit ⵉⴷⴰ ⵓ ⵜⴰⵏⴰⵏⴻ ) who speak their native dialect ( Tachelhit ).
economy
In addition to agriculture, which is more self-sufficient, date and honey production play an important role in the community's economic life. Since the 1970s, tourism has also been an important source of income for the residents, because Moroccans from Agadir and the surrounding area now also spend the weekends or a few days in the significantly cooler mountain region in the summer.
history
As in almost all Berber regions of Morocco, there is no reliable information on the local history of Imouzzer. It can be assumed that the area was first discovered and explored by nomads ( transhumants ) with their herds of sheep and goats. The gradual process of settling down may not have begun until around 1,000 years ago.
Attractions
- The townscape with its whitewashed houses surrounded by mountains is well worth seeing; The same applies to the lush green surroundings, in which date palms , argan trees , various types of cacti , wild thyme , lavender etc. grow.
- Walks through the palm groves and along the small fields with barley, beans and other vegetables are particularly recommended in early spring (February / March).
- About four kilometers to the north-west of Imouzzer there are two waterfalls (“bridal veil”), which are particularly beautiful to look at in spring when the almond blossoms.
- The Route du Miel (Honey Route ) leads through several villages along the route from Agadir and in the vicinity of Imouzzer.
- Life in the neighboring villages (e.g. in Timkatti, six kilometers to the west ) is much more original than in Imouzzer.
- Weekly market: farmers and traders from the area sometimes come to the village by donkey. On the weekly market days , the infirmary is manned by a doctor arriving from Agadir who knows Tachelhit .
Festivals
Every year in August, the honey festival ( Moussem du Miel ) takes place, a regionally significant tourist event combined with a market event, in whose supporting program various folkloric and musical performances can be seen.
