The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the seventh time in 1981/82 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the seventh discharge as second highest football -Spielklasse the gentlemen in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1981/82 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 match days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC Motherwell , which at the same time secured participation in the Premier Division season 1982/83 . In addition to Well , the runner-up FC Kilmarnock also rose. FC East Stirlingshire and Queen of the South had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 20 goals was Blair Millar of FC Clydebank .
