After the first album Heavy , bassist Jerry Penrod, singer Darryl DeLoach and guitarist Danny Weis - he switched to Rhinoceros - left the original line-up and were replaced with this album by Erik Brann on guitar and Lee Dorman on bass.

The album was on the Billboard 200 for more than two and a half years (140 weeks) , including 81 weeks in the top ten - at times even together with the follow-up album Ball . It sold over four million copies and was awarded four times platinum by the RIAA for it , exceeding the fourth million in 1993.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Deluxe Edition

In 1995 Iron Butterfly released this most successful album of their career on CD under the title In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Deluxe Edition . The processing was based on the rediscovery of old original recordings. This re-publication was supplemented by two bonus titles ( live and single version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ) and a detailed 36-page booklet with many rare or previously unpublished photos. In addition, the cover received a wobbly image of a fluttering butterfly and the band playing with it.

The live version was first released on the B-side of the 1970 LP Iron Butterfly Live . It differs from the studio version mainly through Doug Ingles' approximately one minute calm and melodic organ playing intro, which is reminiscent of church music. This is followed by In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida in the usual length.
