In Times Before the Light is the debut album by the Norwegian black metal band Covenant . It was published by Mordgrimm in 1997.

Creation and publication

At the end of 1994, the year after the formation of Covenants, the two band founders recorded the demo From the Storm of Shadows with three tracks with Kharon as session bassist . Half a year later, a two-man promo followed with three more tracks for an announced debut album. In addition to the six already known pieces, four more were recorded for In Times Before the Light in autumn 1995 . Alex Kurtagić designed the cover.

The album wasn't released until 1997. In 2002, a remix made by the band was released - now under the band name The Kovenant , which was changed for legal reasons - via Hammerheart Records ; Head Not Found reissued the original version of the album in 2007 with the demo as a bonus.

style

Covenant play melodic-atmospheric Black Metal with typical screeching vocals, distorted guitars and many catchy keyboard passages on the album . There are similarities to the style of bands like Dimmu Borgir , Troll and Carpe Tenebrum . The remix from 2002 was provided with new keyboard arrangements , electronic effects and influences from industrial metal in accordance with the band's then current style .

reception

"In principle, the music is nothing new, but it's still a well-done debut album by the two of them."

- Wehrmut : voenger.de

“The album hit like a bomb. The songs and their arrangement were simply brilliant and well thought out down to the last detail. "
