Independent Days

The Independent Days | Internationales Filmfest (short form: IDIF ) is a film festival for independent films as well as for low- and no-budget films . It has taken place in Karlsruhe every spring since 1999 .

history

The Independent Days emerged from the film workshop of the working group for culture and communication at the University of Karlsruhe and was initiated in 1998 as a film festival . The first Independent Days took place in 1999 in the ballroom of the student house on the campus of the University of Karlsruhe , initially as a student event. In 2003, the Independent Days left the university campus and found a new venue in the Tempel Kulturzentrum, supplemented in 2004 by a 35mm program in the film theater “Die Kurb”.

In 2006 the association of the same name was founded by Michael Nagenborg, Oliver Langewitz and Thomas Wendt. The Independent Days e. V. and the Filmboard Karlsruhe e. V. have been organizing a multi-day program every year since then, which is made up of low and no budget films by professional filmmakers and film students as well as free, non-competitive film blocks. In 2009 the eleventh Independent Days took part in the Karlsruhe Festival with open air performances of four short film programs .

The Karlsruhe Artistic Cinema Schauburg has been the venue for the nominated films since 2007 . Oliver Langewitz has been the festival director since 2008.

The Independent Days are a full member of the AG Kurzfilm . They are included in the German Films short film festival list. In 2017 they received an EFFE label from the European Festivals Association , making them one of the most outstanding European festivals.

Competitions and Prizes

Only films that cost less than 2,500 euros per minute are admitted to the competition for low-budget productions, and for no-budget productions less than 100 euros per minute of running time. Both short and long films can be submitted.

Numerous film prizes are awarded at the annual film festival . In 2018, prizes worth a total of 10,000 euros were awarded in eleven categories. Expert juries made up of film and media professionals decide on the prizes in ten categories, as well as the “Golden ID” audience award from the city of Karlsruhe, endowed with 1,500 euros. The “Film Prize of the Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Karlsruhe ” is endowed with 2,500 euros, the “Georg Fricker Film Prize” for the best Eastern European short film production with 1,500 euros and the “Best Short Shortfilm” by the Badische Neuesten Nachrichten with 500 euros. Further prizes are the “Newbie Award” for the best first work, the “Indie Award” for the best independently produced full-length feature film, the “Roncalli Forum Film Prize” for interreligious dialogue and the “Female Award” for the best female directorial work.
