India "Willie" Bush (born July 13, 1990 ; died January 4, 2009 in the White House ) was a female house cat owned by George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush . The black American Shorthair cat lived with the Bush family for nearly two decades. She received the title "First Feline" in allusion to similar names as First Lady for the wife of the US President.

Life

India came into the Bush family's household as a young cat between 1991 and 1992 , primarily for twin daughters Barbara and Jenna Bush . She stayed with Laura and George W. Bush when the kids went to college . When George W. Bush was named 43rd President of the United States , the cat moved with him and Laura Bush from the Texas Governor's Mansion to the White House.

In 2004 protests broke out in India over the name of the cat, which was misunderstood as a corruption of the country. In July 2004, a picture of George W. Bush was burned during a demonstration in Thiruvananthapuram . The Bushs refused to change the name but issued a press release stating that the name was chosen as a tribute to baseball player Rubén Sierra , nicknamed "El Indio". This played for the Texas Rangers when George W. Bush owned the team. In fact, the name was given by Barbara Bush. A well-known nickname, by which the female house cat also became known, was "Willie".

Traditionally, the animals of US presidents are often the subject of media reports. India also had an official profile on the White House site. Her favorite place indicated there was the library, her alleged favorite book was the children's book If You Take a Mouse to the Movies by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond , a book that Laura Bush traditionally read to young visitors to the White House during the holidays. The two Scottish Terriers Barney and Miss Beazley remained in the foreground of the reporting . However, India was featured in various White House “barneycam” videos, most of which were broadcast at Christmas. In 2008 India was also featured in an issue of Architectural Digest .

India passed away on January 4th, 2009 at the age of 18. The family published an obituary through Laura Bush's press officer Sally McDonough. In this, the family was very affected by the death of their long-standing house cat.
