List of cat breeds |
The American Shorthair is believed to be descended from the predecessors of today's British Shorthair , which were brought to North America by the British settlers .
history
The English settlers who emigrated to North America took cats on the ships to protect their valuable cargo from mice and rats. Most of these cats settled in the New World and developed special traits that helped them cope with their new life, especially the climate. In the early 20th century, breeding programs were set up to identify the merits of these cats. Originally the breed was called "Domestic Shorthair" (house cat), but in 1966 it was renamed "American Shorthair" to differentiate its American character from other breeds. In addition, it should be differentiated from the street cats.
Appearance
The American Shorthair is a very athletic cat that has a larger, leaner, and more powerful body than its relative, the British Shorthair . It is medium to large in size, strong and muscular, not too compact, but supple. The rib cage is round and well developed. The legs are strong, sturdy, of medium length and end in firm, round paws. The medium-long tail has a broad base and tapers into a rounded tip. The broad skull makes a round impression and is slightly longer than it is wide. The nose is broad and of medium length. The profile is concave, there is a slight stop. The muzzle is massive and angular. The neck is muscular and strong. The ears are medium-sized and erect with slightly rounded tips. The ear distance is rather small. The round eyes stand wide apart and are set at a slight angle. In silver animals the eye color is green, in black animals golden. The fur is short, dense, firm and shiny. Some organizations allow all colors, others not.
