The Egyptian Mau is a natural breed first depicted in historical wall paintings in Egypt . Body and face have a moderate shape, the fur has a polka dot pattern. The original color is brownish.

The Mau has large, almond-shaped eyes. With a top speed of around 50 km / h, it is the fastest of the house cats.

Emergence

The Russian exile Nathalie Troubetzkoj was so enthusiastic about the polka-dot drawing of the cats in Cairo that she brought two cats to Italy and bred them to a tomcat that she got from the Syrian ambassador. In 1956 she went to America and in 1958 she registered her breeding under the name Fatima .

Recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1977 , the breed has been bred in Europe since 1988. At that time, a Dutch and a Swiss breeder brought the first Egyptian Mau from America. Today there are very few breeders of the Egyptian Mau in Europe.
