List of cat breeds |
Snowshoe (English; German: snowshoe ) is the name of a cat breed . Named after their showy white paws, this breed combines the markings of a Siamese cat with white sections. There are two types of fur: Gloves with a limited amount of white, and two-tone with a higher amount of white on the face and body.
Snowshoes are cuddly and loud, but have a soft voice.
Emergence
As early as the 1950s, there were first attempts to breed cats with point drawings ("Siamese drawing") and white feet. However, the founder of the breed is the Siamese cat breeder Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty from Philadelphia, USA, who found three kittens with white markings in a litter of Siamese cats. By outcrossing with American shorthair cats and mating back with Siamese cats, she succeeded in consolidating the typical snowshoe pattern. The Snowshoe was brought in 1974 by Vikki Olander for recognition as an experimental breed by the breeding associations CFF and ACA. However, interest in the snowshoe decreased, so that by 1977 only four animals were registered. Through the efforts of Jim Hoffmann and Georgia Kuhnell, it was finally possible to revive the breed. In 1982 the Snowshoe received championship status with the CFF. The breeding associations TICA and ACFA followed.
Mollie Southall and her Coldenufforsnow cattery are largely responsible for the continued existence of the breed in Great Britain, after there was only one Snowshoe breeder in the country in 1998 with Maureen Shackell.
The recognition in Germany was promoted by the families Nötzig and Heintrof with the kennel community Nö-Heis. Unlike in the USA, mating of the Snowshoe with Siamese is not allowed in Germany. The main outcrosses here were the Holy Burma , Ragdoll , British Shorthair and European Shorthair .
