The Indian long-eared hedgehog ( Hemiechinus collaris ) is a species of the long-eared hedgehog ( Hemiechinus ) genus . It is a relatively small representative of the hedgehog that occurs mainly in India and Pakistan.

features

The body length of the H. collaris is between 14 and 17 cm. On the side of the head are the 3–4 cm long, very mobile ears. The stub tail reaches a length of about 23 mm. The spines, which are embedded in a layer of muscle, are usually ringed dark brown and white. The underside of the body is whitish.

distribution and habitat

The Indian long-eared hedgehog is endemic to Pakistan and India . It occurs in Pakistan in the provinces of Punjab and Sindh and in the north-western Frontier region . In India it can be found in the states of Gujarat , Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh . It is widespread and can be found up to an altitude of 2000 m. Its habitat are deserts and semi-deserts near bodies of water as well as agricultural areas .

Way of life

The Indian long-eared hedgehog is a nocturnal loner who inhabits caves in the ground. The insectivore can cover distances of up to 5 km in search of forage, but if there is a shortage of food or water, it can also do without food and water for a long time. In some regions the animals can hibernate for up to three months, but not in particularly hot areas.

The animals have large ears, eyes and long whiskers on the snout, highly developed sensory organs, which enable them to find food and partners.

Reproduction

Once a year the female hedgehog gives birth to 1–4 young animals after approx. 5–6 weeks. These are initially blind and after birth still have soft spines that are only completely hardened after 2 weeks. The hedgehog children are weaned at around one month and sexually mature at six weeks.
