In the near future, the Boston plague threatens to spread across the entire North American east coast. The Whitefield corporation is promising help, providing people with clean drinking water and soon also wants to offer food. Ben works with his ex-girlfriend Lisa on the Boston Daily. While Ben works as a third-rate editor in the knowledge desk, Lisa waits for the big story. The quiet editorial life came to an end when a group of people tried to prove something was wrong with Whitefield. In the town hall, Lisa observes how her informant Taylor Lambert shoots the mayor and then draws blood from him. Lambert escapes and tries to meet Lisa in the editorial office, but only meets Ben. Doubting Ben's loyalty, he does not hand over the blood tube, which apparently does not contain human blood, to him, but instead fled. Lambert is shot dead by a police officer in the street. The blood tube rolls over the asphalt in the direction of Ben, who is hiding behind a car. Ben hides the blood tube in a mailbox and then turns himself in to the police, who then interrogate him.
When Ben is free, Lisa calls him on the pretext of a meeting. However, she has previously observed Ben and is now securing the blood tube herself. Ben notices the excuse and confronts Lisa. They decide to take the blood tube to Ben's friend Knutt for analysis. While waiting in a café across the street, Ben and Lisa notice two armed men, so they warn Knutt. However, he can no longer escape and only type an email before he is abducted. The sample is also stolen.
Ben and Lisa go back to the editorial office to read the email. It contains important information about the composition of the blood. It is made up of acetamidane , an amino acid that only exists in space. Suddenly someone communicates with the two of them over the Internet and warns them about their boss, Carla Plume, who suddenly turns into an alien and attacks them both. However, Malcolm comes to their aid. He is one of the aliens, but his intentions are different from the others and he wants to stop the reproduction at all costs. Humans should be used as hosts. The water supply is used as a transport route for infection. Malcolm's plan is to use Ben's DNA to create a virus that will stop the plague from spreading.
